Explaining how to start a meeting on Google (Hangout) Meet! Compared to Zoom

At HanamiWEB Online School,

●Ask questions in real-time in the virtual study room!

●Ask as many questions as you want via chat!

●E-learning materials that you can learn as much as you want, 24 hours a day!

All included for just 2,500 yen/month!

Around April 9, 2020, the name suddenly changed from Hangout Meet to Google Meet.

Furthermore, on April 29, 2020, any Google user will be able to start using Google Meet!

What is Google (Hangout) Meet?

What is Google Hangout Meet?

This is a highly secure online conferencing tool provided by Google that is useful in business situations.

It's the same as Zoom and Skype. I decided to use Google (Hangout) Meet after the vulnerability issue of Zoom came up. I want my customers to be able to participate in online courses with peace of mind!

Furthermore, since Google (Hangout) Meet is a subscription-based service that enables simultaneous online meetings with multiple people, we are now refraining from holding group lessons for WordPress beginners due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, so we are also making preparations to resume group lessons.

⇒The content will be different from the usual WordPress group course.[Online event] Would you like to share some time writing a WordPress blog? You can also ask questions on the spot while learning tips on how to write a blog!We are currently holding these classes. Until you get used to group classes on Google Meet, you can join for the same price of 500 yen!

To use Google (hangout) meet, you need to register with G Suit and pay a subscription, which costs 680 yen per month. If you think of it as the cost of one lunch (cheap), isn't that a reasonable price to pay?

We will introduce in detail how to register and set up G Suit with screen captures. Please drop by!

Setting up the DNS for G Suit was a little difficult.

Google (hangout) meet functions available on G Suit Basic

The number of simultaneous participants in Google (hangout) meet varies depending on the G Suit plan. The Basic plan allows up to 100 people. That's plenty for most people.

The Business plan is for 150 users, and the Enterprise plan is for 250 users.

This is the only difference between the plans; all other features are the same.

As the shift to online continues, Enterprise plans will be offered for all plans until the end of September.

Google extends free premium features of its web conferencing service "Meet" until the end of September! I used the following as reference.

Useful features of Google (Hangout) Meet! Compared to Zoom

I have been using Zoom for a long time, so I would like to compare the ease of use of Google (Hangout) Meet compared to Zoom.

A unique URL is issued for each conference room.

When you set up a meeting with Google (Hangout) Meet, a unique URL is issued for each meeting, which can be accessed without a password.

When you set up a meeting with Zoom by specifying a time, a unique URL and even a password will be issued.

This is the same for Google and Zoom. Google does not require a password, but security has been strengthened, so it should be fine without a password.

Create an event from Google Calendar and issue a meeting room URL

You can set up a Google (hangout) meet from Google Calendar. You can also create meetings from Google Calendar using the Zoom app.

As of May 2020, you can now start a Google Meet meeting from the Gmail app. You can issue a meeting URL as a host from the Gmail app, or join from an invited meeting URL.

In this respect, there is no difference between Google (Hangout) Meet and Zoom.

You can join online meetings without installing an app

Zoom requires the installation of a dedicated app, whereas Google (Hangout) Meet works on a browser, so no app needs to be installed. However, a dedicated app is required to access from a smartphone.

Requirements for Google (hangout) meet include

  • chromet
  • Fire fox
  • Safari
  • Edge

It says that you can use it without installing the app. For smartphones, you will need to install a dedicated app to join Google (Hangout) Meet.

Security

Zoom's vulnerability has been highlighted

As of April 2020, articles like this one are appearing online. I was worried that the ban would come soon in Japan too, so I switched to Google (hangout) meet early. Since it's Google, I think that even if a security vulnerability is found, it will be resolved quickly.

Number of simultaneous online meeting participants

Zoom's free plan allows for up to 40 minutes for simultaneous meetings with three or more participants, and unlimited time for one-on-one meetings.

In the case of Google (Hangout) Meet, even with Basic, up to 100 people can participate in online meetings at the same time.

No makeup required! Snap Camera app

You can use the Snap Camera app, which automatically enables video recording on both Zoom and Google (Hangour) Meet. The installation location for the app is listed below.

Snap Camera: A video editing app you should install now

Participation possible without membership registration

You do not need to create an account for either Zoom or Google (Hangout) Meet. You can join Google (Hangout) Meet even if you do not have a Google account!

No password required

Unlike Zoom, there is no system for generating passwords. Each meeting has its own unique URL, allowing you to start a meeting safely without a password.

Screen sharing feature is problematic

Since Zoom runs on an app, even if you use the screen sharing function to share a browser or file, the Zoom app will shrink and you will always be able to see the other person's face, whereas Google (Hangout) Meet runs on a browser, so the other person's face will be visible on the browser.

Therefore, if you display a different browser or share a PowerPoint presentation in full screen, you will not be able to see the other person's face. In other words, you will not be able to see the other person's reaction.

In this regard, I hope that the screen sharing function of Google (Hangout) Meet will be improved!

Summary of the differences between Zoom and Google (Hangout) Meet

There is not much difference between Zoom and Google (Hangout) Meet. Since it is a paid plan, you can participate in online meetings at the same time if you also use a paid plan for Zoom. The reason for choosing Google (Hangout) Meet isSecurity and Trust in Googleit might be?

We will continue to introduce how to use Google (Hangout) Meet.

Survey after Google Meet ends

When you finish an online meeting, a survey about your audio and video is displayed. I feel that Google Meet is improving every day.

In fact, since I first used Google (hangout) meet in mid-April, the audio and images have been updated every time I use Google (hangout) meet. I no longer experience any issues such as delayed images or audio interruptions. Screen sharing also works without any problems.
