Google(hangout) meet will be held on April 29, 2020.Google Japan Blogannounced that Google Meet is now available for free to all users.
Until now, in order to use Google (hangout) meet, I had to sign up for G Suite, and I actually just signed up for a paid plan the other day. The Basic plan costs 680 yen.
Why is Google (Hangout) Meet now available for free?
This is because the demand for telework has increased dramatically due to the impact of the new coronavirus.
- Daily Google Meet usage has increased more than 30x since January
- In April, users spent more than 3 billion minutes each day
- Approximately 3 million new users are added every day
- More than 100 million people attend meetings every day
As the demand for online activities increases, you may have heard about Zoom a lot in the news. At the same time, you may have seen more and more reports about Zoom's security vulnerabilities in online news.
I personally think that it was made available for free to compete with Zoom.
Do the functions of Google (Hangout) Meet, which can be used with a personal free account, are the same?
meet.google.com You can now start a meeting just by logging in to the account. The following features are restricted in the free account:
- Users who do not have a Google account cannot join the meeting (anonymous participation is not possible)
- Each use is limited to 60 minutes
- Available until September 30, 2020
I think 60 minutes is not enough time to hold a class. I think that with the cooperation of the customers, we might have to leave the room once and reconnect after 60 minutes.
If you are wondering how to start Google Meet, please stop by as we have explained it here!
Until when can unregistered free personal users of G Suit use Google (Hangout) Meet?
It has been announced that it will be available until September 30, 2020. If you want to continue using it after that, you will probably have to start using G suit, but I hope that Google will make it a free tool!
Compare the advantages of Google (Hangout) Meet with the online conference room Zoom
I think the biggest difference is security! Google Meet is more secure in terms of security.
- Google Meet's meeting code is a complex code by default.
- All data transmitted during Google Meet video meetings is encrypted
- Since Google Meet is completed in a web browser, there is no need to install an app, which reduces vulnerability to security threats.
- Regularly undergo rigorous security and privacy audits
In terms of functionality, Zoom is easier to use.
- Zoom requires the installation of the app. Google Meet requires the installation of the app only on smartphones.
- Since Google Meet runs on a browser, if you use the screen sharing function, you won't be able to see the other person's face or the browser tab.
- I feel that Zoom has a more stable connection. Google Meet always displays a survey after the meeting. I feel that the quality of the audio and video is improving every day.
So, which should you use: Google Meet or Zoom?
My current situation is that I am using Google Meet as much as possible to get used to it, but I am also offering online lessons via Zoom for existing clients and those who are familiar with using Zoom.
If you are used to Zoom, you may find it difficult to use, such as not being able to access Google Meet or screen sharing not working properly.
Group lessons are not possible with Zoom's free plan, so we use Google Meet for group classes.
The audio and image quality of Google Meet is improving every day, so I think the functionality will also continue to improve.
You can easily issue a meeting URL from Google Calendar or Gmail.
I'm really looking forward to future Google Meets!
If you want to use it for more than 60 minutes and are considering signing up for G suit, we will explain how to sign up and set up G suit, so please refer to it!
