Did you know that you actually need to do some initial setup to set up your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) account? We'll pinpoint exactly what you need to do to set it up!

If you run a WordPress site, you can easily implement analytics using Site Kit by Google, an official Google plugin, with no coding required!

Video explanation

We have a video that covers the initial setup after connecting the GA4, so please check out the overall process first!

Log in to the Google Analytics admin page

Once you're logged in to Analytics, go to Settings

If you manage multiple sites, please select the account you want to configure from the image below before proceeding.

Once you have displayed the account you want to configure, click the gear icon in the bottom left.

Check the settings for automatic measurement of click events

GA4 has a system that automatically measures events. Check if the setting is ON, and if it is not, turn it ON.

  • Data Stream
  • Click on the account you want to

I think it's set to OFF by default. In this case, only page views (viewing events) are measured, so switch it to ON.

When this is turned ON, all items of events that are automatically measured will be subject to measurement.

Exclude IP addresses

There may be times when you want to exclude your own access from being measured.

After clicking on [Data Stream] above, click on [Set tag settings] at the bottom.

Click [Show all] in the upper right to display all items, then click "Define internal traffic."

Click the Create button.

The items that need to be set are

  • Give a name
  • IP Address Equals
  • IP address input

The setup is now complete.

To find out about IP addresses, just do an internet search such as "look up IP address".

Enabling detailed user data measurement

Next, we will set up the app so that we can measure more detailed user data.

  • Data Settings
  • Data collection

Turn on [Google signals data collection].

Extended event data retention period

Extend the storage period for events that can be used in exploration data. The default is 2 months, so select 14 months. This does not mean the storage period for analytics data, but the storage period for event data that can be used in exploration reports.

  • Data Settings
  • Data Retention

Integration with Search Concole

By linking Analytics and Search Concole, you will be able to view data such as search keywords in Analytics.

Click on the link from the Seaech concole to connect.

Click the link to connect.

Select Account

Select Web Stream

Finally, confirm the settings and click [Submit] to complete the process.

summary

These are the points you should definitely check once you connect the GA4.

  • Expanded measurement events from data streams
  • IP Address Exclusion
  • Expanded user signal data (data collection)
  • Extended data retention period
  • Search Console Integration
